Arnøya and Kågen are two islands full of ski terrain and pure summit-to-sea skiing. I have been guiding here for over 10 years, pioneering ski touring on the island. These two islands continue to be my absolute favourite spots, even after all these seasons. Mountains, glaciers, and the ocean — it’s just a unique place. Some terrain here gets rarely skied because only a few people know the place well. Year after year, I return – the summit-to-sea skiing, lovely accommodations, and local food are a combination that also makes many of my guests return repeatedly. Compared to more popular places in Northern Norway (e.g., Lyngen or Lofoten), Arnøya and Kågen have wide open slopes; bushes or trees are mostly absent. Combined with a snow-rich climate, Arnøya allows for skiing from summits right to the coastline well into May. Summits range from 600 m to 1,228 m, offering numerous ski options on all aspects. Arnøyhøgda (1168 m) is among the most rewarding summits to climb and ski, while the smaller peaks with straight runs to the sea are guest favourites. Here, we often ski several laps where the skiing is best. The tours on the neighboring island Kågen – my absolute favourite – have a more alpine feel, with glaciers, steep slopes, and terrain for all skill levels, culminating in the great Store Kågtinden (1228 m).Best Time The best time frame for this trip is early April to May. At this time, the snowpack has typically stabilised, and the days are long. In April, it is not uncommon to have corn snow on south-facing slopes and powdery snow on the north aspects. In May, the sun only sets for a few hours, allowing for flexible tour planning and long days out. Accommodation We are based on the island of Arnøya. Accommodation is at ︎Lauksletta Overnatting, with cosy rooms and excellent, abundant food – a guest favourite since 2015. Several tours start directly at the house. Warm waffles, cake, and coffee or tea await us each day after skiing. Logistics The tours typically run for 6 days, from Sunday to Saturday. One way to reach Arnøya is by driving (4–5 hours). A faster, more convenient option is the speedboat from Tromsø to Skjervøy, leaving Sundays at 16:45 (arriving 16:40 in Skjervøy). I will meet you in Tromsø or Skjervøy on Sunday and transfer you to the accommodation. Once in Lauksletta, driving times are short. Some tours require no driving at all. Kågen and the town of Skjervøy are nearby and accessible by ferry. On the last day, we take the Hurtigruten back (16:45–23:45). Alternatively, you can return on Sunday via speedboat (17:30–19:50). Both options allow skiing on the last day.&nbsp; Group Size and Skill Level The trip is designed for small groups (1–5 participants). Contact me if your group is larger. The terrain suits many skill levels, but secure off-piste skiing is essential. Basic kick-turn ability is recommended, but I will coach you if needed. The mountain has fascinated me ever since my first trip to Georgia in 2006. Over the years, I’ve returned many times to explore its ski routes and surrounding peaks. You can view some of these adventures in the photo gallery at ︎ ps-photo.net. The region offers a unique combination of challenging ski mountaineering and breathtaking high alpine scenery. Whether you're an intermediate or expert ski tourer, the Kazbek area provides a wide variety of routes and terrain. This 7-day ski touring adventure in the High Caucasus offers moderate to challenging routes, allowing participants to summit multiple peaks exceeding 3000 and 4000 meters. While Kazbek may be the main goal for many, our experience in the area allows us to offer a touring program that goes far beyond just this summit. Temperatures are milder, and snow coverage is typically at its best. Since the snowline is usually too high for valley skiing, we head directly to AltiHut and base ourselves there for the entire trip.&nbsp;After exploring the terrain last season, I can confidently say the mountains around AltiHut offer enough quality ski routes to fill an entire week even late in the season.AltiHut – Our Base in the Georgian Mountains Opened in 2018, AltiHut is the first modern mountain hut in Georgia, built with sustainability in mind. Located at 3014 m, it’s reached via a 4-hour ski tour from the village of Kazbegi/Gergeti (Stepantsminda, 1800 m). The hut provides direct access to ski lines on and around Mkinvartsveri, including multiple 4000 m glaciated summits. The hut offers full board in its own restaurant (included in the package), with a great selection of drinks to round off your days. You’ll also find a music system, a well-stocked library, and historic photos—some of which I’ve taken myself!
