Steep and Midnight Sun Skiing
May / June 2025
Arctic Norway
Kågen and Skjomen-Narvik (May - June 2025)
May and June are among the magical months for skiing in Norway: 24-hour light, corn snow at midnight on north faces. 2025 has brought record snowfalls to several areas in Northern Scandinavia, surpassing the legendary seasons of 2017 and 2020. Two areas are particularly suited: the island of Kågen in Skjervøy and the glaciated mountains near Narvik. While the first is ideal for fall-line descents to near sea in May, the latter is better suited for alpine adventures in June, with mountain huts and access to the snow line on gravel roads.
Given 24 hours of light and the generally good stability at this time of year, the trips are aimed at those seeking steeper terrain and long tours, but there are plenty of moderate ski tours. Trips can be booked from 3 to more days.
Kågen Island
Examples of tours include Frostisen (1724 m, Narvik), glacier skiing on the remote Huinnarčohkka (1788 m) and Storsteinsfjellet (1893 m, Skjomen), the S-N traverse of Kågen island (Skjervøy), or skiing steep north face in the midnight sun on Store Kågtinden (Skjervøy).
