SVELAV Friåkning  1+ / Freeride 1+

The SVELAV Freeride 1 is a foundational course designed for skiers and snowboarders eager to learn about avalanche safety. The course covers the basics of avalanche formation, terrain assessment, and danger recognition. Participants will learn how to choose safe routes and receive an introduction to decision-making and risk management methods. Additionally, the course includes training on avalanche rescue gear and companion rescue practice.
Based on my experience teaching Canadian AST courses, I find that adding an extra day for terrain travel significantly enhances the learning experience. This additional day (three days instead of two) allows for more hands-on practice and helps participants gain confidence in real-world conditions.
